Dating back over six hundred years, the Thiers region of France is renowned for its excellence in knife making where Au Nain’s Laguiole steak knives are meticulously handcrafted. Each knife is individually handmade by local artisans using time-honored craftsmanship. These knives have razor-sharp stainless-steel blades that easily slice through steak while feeling substantial and comfortable in your hand. Au Nain’s distinguished Laguiole steak knives have rustic handles made of natural juniper wood that feature decorative etching on the spine of the knife and embellished rivets. As these Laguiole steak knives are made from an attractive wood grain that is entirely natural, no handle is exactly the same. Laguiole knives are a traditional style of knife that originated in France in the 1820’s and is renowned for its three-rivet curved handle and a bee emblem, the symbol of Napoleon and French monarchy on the bolster. These steak knives come housed in a beautiful wood box that is ideal for storage and gift giving.
The legend of Au Nain began in 1885 in St. Remy, France, by the current owner’s great-grandfather, Gaston Saint-Joanis. When his main competitor boasted of being the “Giant of the knife”, the imposing 6’5” Saint-Joanis replied with characteristic humor and panache by creating the brand “Au Nain” … the dwarf! And that is how this giant of the French cutlery business was born! Four generations later, Au Nain has established its reputation with consumers around the world who demand high standards from their handmade stainless-steel knives and utensils.
